열을 만드는 짝
가시두더지 메리는 작은 퍼즐을 아주 좋아했어요. 숫자를 톡톡 두드리고, 한참 생각한 다음, 다정한 답을 기다리는 걸 좋아했지요. 어느 날 아침, 메리는 상자거북 타비와 다정한 거미 술라와 함께 기차 승강장으로 서둘러 갔어요. 증기 기차가 승강장 옆에서 기다리고 있었어요. 기차의 종이 작게 한 번 땡 울렸어요. 나무 탁자 위에는 9가 적힌 숫자 타일이 놓여 있었어요. 그 옆에는 빈자리가 있었지요. “모든 숫자가 짝을 찾을 때까지 기차는 떠나지 않을 거야.” 술라가 말했어요. “두 짝을 합하면 10이 되어야 해.” 메리는 열심히 생각했어요. 타비는 한 발로 탁자를 톡톡 두드렸어요. “먼저 작은 숫자로 해 보자.” 타비가 말했어요. 메리는 1이 적힌 타일을 집었어요. 그리고 9 옆에 놓았지요. 9와 1. 10이에요! 기차가 기쁜 듯 푸 하고 숨을 내뿜었어요. 메리의 가슴도 기쁘게 폴짝 뛰었어요. “모든 숫자가 짝을 찾을 수 있을까?” 메리가 물었어요. “찾아보자.” 타비가 말했어요. “천천히 세어 보자.”
술라는 탁자에서 정원 문까지 은빛 실을 빙글빙글 뽑았어요. “내 실을 따라와!” 술라가 외쳤어요. “다음 퍼즐이 밖에서 기다리고 있어!” 친구들은 역 정원을 가로질러 갔어요. 낮은 나무 경사로 근처에는 스케이트보드가 땅에 놓여 있었어요. 경사로 위에는 8이 적힌 타일이 있었어요. 술라의 거미줄에는 2가 적힌 타일이 기다리고 있었지요. “8과 2.” 메리가 말했어요. 메리는 발톱으로 세어 보았어요. “8, 그리고 2를 더 세면 10!” 타비가 미소 지었어요. “큰 숫자도 작은 짝 하나만 있으면 될 때가 있어.” 그때 스케이트보드가 경사로를 따라 살살 굴러 내려갔어요. 메리는 두 앞발을 스케이트보드 위에 올렸어요. 타비는 메리 뒤에 올라탔고, 술라는 옆에 묶은 실을 잡았어요. 쌩! 친구들은 꽃들을 지나 미끄러지듯 달려가 기차 옆에 멈추었어요. 풀밭에는 타일 두 개가 더 기다리고 있었어요. 하나에는 7, 다른 하나에는 3이라고 쓰여 있었어요. “7과 3!” 술라가 외쳤어요. “이것들도 합하면 10이야!” 기차의 종이 두 번 울렸어요. 정원도 친구들과 함께 웅웅 노래하는 것 같았어요.
친구들은 숫자 칸이 있는 기차에 올라탔어요. 기차가 칙칙폭폭 움직이기 시작했어요. 안에는 숫자 짝을 놓는 작은 칸들이 있는 놋쇠판이 있었어요. 메리는 한 칸에서 6을 보았고, 그 옆 칸에서 4를 보았어요. “6과 4.” 메리가 작은 목소리로 말했어요. “또 10이네.” 타비는 5가 적힌 타일 두 개를 찾았어요. 타비는 그것들을 나란히 놓았어요. “5와 5.” 타비가 말했어요. “이 둘도 짝이야.” 메리는 앞발을 짝짝 쳤어요. “숫자들은 소풍 온 친구들 같아. 필요한 만큼씩 가져오잖아.” 갑자기 기차가 느려졌어요. 놋쇠판에서 아주 작은 딸깍 소리가 났어요. 한 줄에 마지막 짝 하나가 빠져 있었어요. 메리는 배가 살짝 흔들리는 것 같았어요. 우리가 숫자 하나를 잊어버린 걸까요? 술라는 의자 아래를 살펴보았어요. 타비는 놋쇠판 뒤를 살펴보았어요. 메리는 모든 타일을 살펴보았어요. 1부터 9까지의 타일이 모두 있었지만, 뒤섞여 있었어요. “기억해 보자.” 타비가 말했어요. “9에는 1이 필요했어. 8에는 2가 필요했고. 7에는 3이 필요했어. 6에는 4가 필요했고. 5에는 5가 필요했지.”
메리는 짝들을 바닥에 한 줄로 늘어놓았어요. 그리고 각 짝을 앞발로 톡톡 짚었어요. 줄은 가지런하고 작은 무늬를 만들었어요. 기차가 따뜻한 황금빛으로 빛나기 시작했어요. 마침내 증기 기차는 달빛이 비치는 언덕 꼭대기 역에 도착했어요. 별빛 아래에는 긴 벤치가 기다리고 있었어요. 친구들은 그 위에 다섯 짝을 차례로 놓았어요. 9와 1, 8과 2, 7과 3, 6과 4, 5와 5. 술라는 거미줄 위에서 춤을 추었어요. 타비는 자랑스럽게 고개를 끄덕였어요. 메리는 줄 전체를 바라보았어요. “1부터 9까지 모든 숫자가 짝을 찾았어.” 메리가 말했어요. “그리고 모든 짝은 10을 만들어!” 기차는 지금까지 중 가장 크게 푸 하고 숨을 내뿜었어요. 메리와 타비와 술라는 웃었고, 그 웃음소리는 언덕 너머로 굴러갔어요. 그때 메리는 벤치에서 빈자리 하나를 더 발견했어요. 메리는 그곳에 작은 나무 별을 놓았어요. 그것은 숫자가 아니었어요. 친구에게 도움이 필요할 때는 살펴보고, 세어 보고, 알맞은 것을 찾으라는 약속 같은 표시였지요. 세 친구는 별빛 아래에서 집으로 돌아갔어요. 다음 퍼즐을 풀 준비를 하면서요.
