Dreamy
The Dreamy cast

Three friends who keep the stories

You will bump into them around Dreamy. They are not decoration — each one has a job, and one of them only speaks when she is doing hers.

Peli
Nimi
Glim

Peli

Pelican

Peli keeps the stories. A pelican's pouch was the obvious place to put a library, so that is where yours lives. When your shelf is empty his pouch hangs flat; when it is full, it is round.

He is the only one of the three who talks. You will find him where something needs explaining — an empty shelf, a page you have not visited before, a thing that went wrong. He will never turn up in the middle of a story, though. A story belongs to you and whoever you are reading it to.

"Your shelf is empty tonight. Shall we put something on it?"

Nimi

Squirrel

Nimi collects words. Squirrels gather things and remember where they put them, which is more or less what learning a new word is. Every word your child meets in a story, she stashes.

She is the one you will see around the learning trail and the word cards. She chatters, but she does not make speeches — she would rather show you the acorn than talk about it.

Chatters. Never a full sentence.

Glim

Firefly

Glim is the spark, and she is almost always quiet. She turns up when something is happening and leaves when it stops, and she says nearly everything she has to say by getting brighter.

There is one exception, and it is the only place you will ever read her words: while your story is being made, she is the one making the light for it — so that is the screen where she talks. Anywhere else she is weather, and weather does not explain itself.

She is drawn much smaller than the other two on purpose. She is a glimmer at the edge of the page, not a presenter.

If you spot her drifting past, you can tap her — she will hand you a story idea.

Glim has no "confused" picture, and that is deliberate. When she is unsure she flickers and then steadies — a hesitation, never a stutter that looks broken. It is the one expression in the whole cast that is movement rather than a drawing.

That is the three of them. Shall we write something?
