दस बनाने वाली जोड़ियाँ
एकिडना मेरी को छोटी-छोटी पहेलियाँ बहुत पसंद थीं। उसे किसी अंक को छूना, थोड़ी देर सोचना और प्यारे-से जवाब का इंतज़ार करना अच्छा लगता था। एक सुबह वह डिब्बे जैसे कछुए टावी और प्यारी मकड़ी सूला के साथ जल्दी-जल्दी रेलगाड़ी के प्लेटफ़ॉर्म पर पहुँची। प्लेटफ़ॉर्म के पास भाप वाली रेलगाड़ी खड़ी थी। उसकी घंटी ने धीरे से टनटन की। लकड़ी की मेज़ पर नौ लिखा हुआ एक अंक-टुकड़ा रखा था। उसके पास एक खाली जगह थी। “जब तक हर अंक को अपना साथी नहीं मिल जाता, रेलगाड़ी नहीं चलेगी,” सूला ने कहा। “दोनों साथी मिलकर दस बनाने चाहिए।” मेरी ने बहुत सोचा। टावी ने एक पैर से मेज़ थपथपाई। “पहले कोई छोटा अंक आज़माते हैं,” उसने कहा। मेरी ने एक लिखा हुआ अंक-टुकड़ा उठाया। उसने उसे नौ के पास रख दिया। नौ और एक। दस! रेलगाड़ी ने खुशी से भाप छोड़ी। मेरी का दिल भी खुशी से उछल पड़ा। “क्या हर अंक को अपना साथी मिल सकता है?” उसने पूछा। “हम देख सकते हैं,” टावी ने कहा। “हम धीरे-धीरे गिन सकते हैं।”
सूला ने मेज़ से बगीचे के फाटक तक चाँदी का धागा काता। “मेरे धागे के पीछे आओ!” उसने पुकारा। “अगली पहेली बाहर इंतज़ार कर रही है।” वे स्टेशन के बगीचे को पार करके आगे बढ़े। एक छोटी लकड़ी की ढलान के पास ज़मीन पर एक पटिया गाड़ी रखी थी। ढलान पर आठ लिखा हुआ एक अंक-टुकड़ा रखा था। सूला के जाले में दो लिखा हुआ एक अंक-टुकड़ा इंतज़ार कर रहा था। “आठ और दो,” मेरी ने कहा। उसने अपने पंजों पर गिना। “आठ, फिर दो और। दस!” टावी मुस्कुराया। “किसी बड़े अंक को बस एक छोटे साथी की ज़रूरत हो सकती है।” तभी पटिया गाड़ी धीरे-धीरे ढलान से नीचे लुढ़कने लगी। मेरी ने उस पर अपने दोनों पंजे रख दिए। टावी उसके पीछे चढ़ गया और सूला ने किनारे से बँधा धागा पकड़ लिया। फुर्र! वे फूलों के पास से फिसलते हुए रेलगाड़ी के बगल में जाकर रुक गए। घास पर दो और अंक-टुकड़े इंतज़ार कर रहे थे। एक पर सात लिखा था। दूसरे पर तीन। “सात और तीन!” सूला खुशी से चिल्लाई। “ये भी मिलकर दस बनाते हैं!” रेलगाड़ी की घंटी दो बार बजी। बगीचा भी उनके साथ गुनगुनाता हुआ लगा।
दोस्त अंकों वाली रेलगाड़ी के डिब्बे में चढ़ गए। रेलगाड़ी छुक-छुक करती हुई चल पड़ी। अंदर पीतल की एक पट्टी लगी थी, जिसमें अंकों के साथियों के लिए छोटी-छोटी जगहें बनी थीं। मेरी ने एक जगह छह और उसके बगल वाली जगह में चार देखा। “छह और चार,” उसने धीरे से कहा। “फिर से दस।” टावी को पाँच लिखे हुए दो अंक-टुकड़े मिले। उसने उन्हें एक-दूसरे के पास रख दिया। “पाँच और पाँच,” उसने कहा। “ये भी साथी हैं।” मेरी ने अपने पंजे बजाए। “अंक पिकनिक में आए दोस्तों जैसे हैं। वे उतना ही लाते हैं, जितनी ज़रूरत होती है।” अचानक रेलगाड़ी धीमी हो गई। पीतल की पट्टी से हल्की-सी खट की आवाज़ आई। उसकी पंक्ति में आखिरी जोड़ी गायब थी। मेरी के पेट में हल्की-सी घबराहट हुई। क्या वे कोई अंक भूल गए थे? सूला ने बेंच के नीचे देखा। टावी ने पट्टी के पीछे देखा। मेरी ने हर अंक-टुकड़े को देखा। वहाँ एक से नौ तक के अंक-टुकड़े थे, लेकिन वे सब उलटे-सीधे मिले हुए थे। “आओ, याद करें,” टावी ने कहा। “नौ को एक चाहिए था। आठ को दो। सात को तीन। छह को चार। पाँच को पाँच।”
मेरी ने जोड़ियों को फर्श पर एक कतार में लगा दिया। उसने हर जोड़ी को अपने पंजे से छुआ। कतार एक सुंदर-सी छोटी योजना जैसी दिखने लगी। रेलगाड़ी गर्म सुनहरी रोशनी से चमकने लगी। आखिरकार भाप वाली रेलगाड़ी चाँदनी से नहाए पहाड़ी स्टेशन पर पहुँच गई। तारों के नीचे एक लंबी बेंच रखी थी। दोस्तों ने उस पर पाँचों जोड़ियाँ सजा दीं: नौ और एक, आठ और दो, सात और तीन, छह और चार, पाँच और पाँच। सूला अपने जाले पर नाचने लगी। टावी ने गर्व से सिर हिलाया। मेरी ने पूरी कतार को देखा। “एक से नौ तक हर अंक का एक साथी है,” उसने कहा। “और हर जोड़ी मिलकर दस बनाती है!” रेलगाड़ी ने अब तक की सबसे बड़ी भाप छोड़ी। मेरी, टावी और सूला हँस पड़े। उनकी हँसी की आवाज़ पहाड़ियों पर दूर तक गूँज गई। तभी मेरी को बेंच पर एक और खाली जगह दिखाई दी। उसने वहाँ लकड़ी का एक छोटा-सा तारा रख दिया। वह कोई अंक नहीं था। वह एक याद दिलाने वाली निशानी थी: जब किसी दोस्त को मदद चाहिए हो, तो देखो, गिनो और जो ठीक बैठे, उसे ढूँढ़ो। तीनों दोस्त तारों के नीचे अपने घर लौटे। वे अपनी अगली पहेली के लिए तैयार थे।
